Jewelry with beryl - everyone will find theirs

Historical reference

Beryl and emerald were already known in the times of Pliny and Theophrastus. Most varieties of beryl have been used in jewelry since ancient times, although due to their different colors they were considered different stones; no distinction was often made between them and similar minerals.

Thus, in ancient times only yellow varieties were called beryl; green ones were often considered peridot, and colorless ones were not distinguished from quartz.

Ancient Egypt primarily used yellow beryl, but it is unknown where exactly the Egyptians mined it. Perhaps the mines were located on the territory of present-day Somalia or Ethiopia, but now nothing is known about mineral deposits in North Africa.

Beryl (it is not known what variety) was one of the stones with which the breastplate of the Jewish high priest was decorated.

Currently, jewelers call beryl only yellow or golden transparent crystals of a certain chemical composition. There is also base beryl; it is a raw material for the production of beryllium metal, the price of which is high.

Place of Birth

Beryl
The largest deposits of beryl are located in the Urals (Russia), South America (Colombia, Brazil), Madagascar, etc.

  • Common beryls are found in Bodenmais (Bavaria), Limoges (France), on the island of Elba, in Sweden (Fynbo, Brodbo), in Cornwallis, etc.
  • In Russia, deposits of noble beryl are Murzinka and Shaitanka in the Sverdlovsk region. Unfortunately, these mines are almost completely exhausted.
  • The famous Emerald mines of the Urals near the village of Izumrud in the Urals provide excellent cutting raw materials for emerald.
  • Beautiful large aquamarine crystals are mined in Transbaikalia (Adun-Chelon).
  • Large deposits of beryl are confined to the pegmatites of the eastern part of the Kola Peninsula (Strelninskoye, Voronetundrovskoye, etc.), in which cut colorless and yellow transparent beryls are sometimes found.
  • The best deposits of noble beryl abroad are considered to be the Coimbatore district in the East Indies, Minas Girays (Brazil) and Colombia.
  • Rare finds of beryl crystals are known in the Alto Ligonya region of Mozambique.
  • Beautiful heliodor crystals from Ukrainian pegmatites of the Zhytomyr region are widely known.

To search for beryllium deposits, a geophysical method is used - beryllometry.

Physical and chemical properties

Without exception, all minerals of the beryllium group are a complex compound of beryllium oxide, aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide with a percentage predominance of the latter. Impurities may contain iron, manganese, and in small quantities uranium and other metals, which act as chromatophores that provide the color of the stone.

This is a hard gem - 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. It is on the same level as topaz, second only to diamond - 10 units, and corundum - 9. The luster is glassy. Noble beryl is characterized by transparency, while industrial beryl is opaque and has a white or grayish color.

Resistant to caustic acids and alkalis. Melts at very high temperatures.

Colors and varieties of beryl

Pure beryl is colorless. Glass shine. The variety of colors of crystals is determined by the composition of impurities: various shades of blue, bluish-green, yellow colors are associated with an admixture of Fe, red or pink - with an admixture of Mn, bright green is due to an admixture of Cr.

Depending on the color there are:

  • Augustite, or maxis beryl, is dark blue.

Augustite

  • Aquamarine - blue, greenish blue.

Aquamarine

  • Bazzit is pale blue.

Rosterite
Ordinary beryl is opaque, white or gray in color, is quite widespread, and, when found in large concentrations, is mined as ore to obtain beryllium.

Transparent varieties of beryl are used as jewelry (precious) stones.

Emerald (English Smaragd, Emeraude) is valued as a jewelry stone of the highest class (order), along with diamond, ruby and cornflower blue sapphire.

Aquamarine and all varieties of noble beryl are also highly valued as jewelry stones.

Appearance of a group of stones

Beryl is the general name for a group of stones that have a common chemical formula with varying concentrations of impurities in their composition. Beryllium silicate itself, which is the raw material for producing pure metal, is colorless and transparent. It has high technological value, but is not used in jewelry. The color of the stone depends on the admixtures of chemical elements in the composition; it is colored beryls that are precious jewelry stones.

Varieties and colors of the mineral

Beryl combines a whole group of precious minerals with different names. The stones have different colors and differ in their physical characteristics. With all this, today under the name “beryl” you can find light green or yellow-green minerals on sale. Depending on what impurities are included in the mineral, different varieties of gems are distinguished.

Varieties of beryl

  • Aquamarine, contains Fe2+ impurities, has a light blue or bluish-greenish tint;
  • Heliodor, contains Fe3 impurities, a light yellow, yellowish-green stone;
  • Bixbite, contains Mn3+ impurities, “red emerald” is a bright red, deep crimson transparent stone;
  • Vorobievite, contains lithium, alkalis and Mn3 impurities - a light pink mineral;
  • Emerald - includes impurities of Cr3+, V3+, color - bright green, rich green transparent stone;
  • Morganite - contains impurities of manganese, and its shade depends on the concentration of this element; the stone can be bright crimson, purple, or orange;
  • Goshenite and roasterite are colorless beryl, a transparent stone of a light milky hue;
  • Masheshe is an amazing and rare gem of a rich ultramarine hue, which the stone retains until the sun's rays fall on it. The mineral is able to restore its shade only after X-ray irradiation;
  • Green beryl is a mineral of a light green hue, which is neither aquamarine nor emerald.

How to recognize a fake

Opaque beryl stone
Attempts to create an artificial beryl stone have so far been unsuccessful. Of course, sometimes scammers try to pass off an ordinary piece of glass or a piece of plastic as a real gem, but it is very easy to expose them. Just try to scratch the crystal with a blade or needle. You cannot damage a real gem.

For high-quality counterfeiting of a mineral, it is necessary to completely recreate its chemical composition, unique to each deposit. As a result, making a bracelet from such a perfect counterfeit will be as expensive as from a real stone, and the meaning of the fake will be lost.

Sometimes it happens that one variety of beryl is passed off as another, which costs more.

To distinguish an emerald from a cheaper but similar stone, you will need some kind of heavy liquid, such as bromoform. A real jewel will sink in such a liquid, while a cheap one will float. You can also place the gem under an ultraviolet lamp. Semi-precious emerald analogues will have a bright reflection, while a genuine crystal will have a duller light.

Usually they try to fake either an emerald or an aquamarine. Now such work is carried out out of pure scientific enthusiasm; there is no commercial sense in it. There are methods in which cheap stone is given the desired shade using heating, but so far they are just being developed.

Carefully!

It happens that emerald is glued together in several layers, and a thin plate of expensive stone is only the outer layer. In this case, you need to carefully look at how the beryl looks in the photograph in a jewelry laboratory; you are unlikely to be able to distinguish a fake on your own.

The magical properties of beryl

Yellow beryl pendant (heliodor)
Noble beryl is endowed with a number of magical qualities that directly affect people's lives. The nugget acts as:

  • "Sorter" of energy. Beryl tends to attract positive energy to its owner. In this case, the stone plays the role of a barrier, repelling all negativity from a person.
  • Family amulet. All the rough edges of family relationships are smoothed out if there is a beryl item in the house.
  • Talisman of good luck in legal disputes. The greenish-golden nugget is an excellent assistant to lawyers of any kind whose work involves defending someone’s rights in court.

Amulets made from the mineral are important for people whose area of activity is exclusively mental. The stone is endowed with properties that can influence the clarity of human consciousness, relieve chronic fatigue, and sharpen the mind. Thanks to this, the owner of the gem will be able to complete the work begun, avoiding mistakes. The talisman will maintain a working spirit, preventing the owner from mentally “burning out.”

Beryl Magic

In addition to healing properties, natural beryl has a wide range of magical qualities. This mineral is believed to:

  • “attracts” good luck and financial well-being;
  • preserves and protects the family hearth;
  • facilitates communication between representatives of different generations (if both parties have a stone);
  • “sorts” energy, leaving positive energy for the owner and pushing away negative energy outside.

Depending on the type of stone, it can be an excellent gift. Travelers are often given an amulet with aquamarine, especially when it comes to traveling by sea. It is believed that this stone guarantees the absence of storms and other troubles while crossing the sea surface.

Jewelry with beryl

Noble golden yellow beryl and heliodor will be an excellent gift for a lawyer. It will allow you to win the case, attract good luck and ensure success.

Bixbit is considered the protector of the family and clan, so jewelry with it is often a family heirloom, passed on from generation to generation. Blue Augustite was used in ancient times as a talisman for the home. The product with it, stored in the home, protected the latter from fire, floods and robbers.

Talismans, amulets, amulets

Ring “Frog Princess” - beryl-emerald, silver
Belief in supernatural phenomena prompted people to create protection for themselves and their loved ones in the form of animals imprinted in stone or other materials.

There was a whole business based on the manufacture and sale of amulets and talismans. There is some truth in this, since people have always been born who were close to nature and felt its processes.

They could predict the future, advise what to do, what could help in a difficult situation.

For example, if a person wanted to make peace with his enemy, then he was recommended to give the enemy a frog made of beryl stone.

Since minerals and labor were expensive and the person was glad to receive an unexpected gift, reconciliation was usually easy.

The meaning is rather not in the philosophy of the stone, but in the very action of people in relation to each other. But the goal was achieved, therefore, it was necessary to continue listening to the predictor.

It was believed that an emerald in a gold frame was a symbol of intelligence and wealth. The only question is – what comes first?

A person needed to think about where to get or for what to buy such an expensive thing. I had to think hard about financial well-being. Eventually, the idea came to the thinker, and he became rich.

Most likely, the person attributed the appearance of wealth to the emerald. In fact, he created his own success, and the mineral was just the initial goal.

Talismans were purchased by people to be confident in the future. The stones were a symbol of hope and allowed one not to lose courage in difficult situations.

Healing properties

Men's ring with beryl
Please note: hereinafter we will refer to ordinary noble beryl - golden-greenish, a fairly common subspecies of the mineral. The fact is that the healing and magical properties of different beryls differ, and each type should be considered from the point of view of lithotherapy, magic and astrology as an independent mineral.

This gem has the following meaning for a person: it affects the heart chakra and the solar plexus chakra. This means affecting primarily the organs located in the chest and upper abdomen. Among them:

  • lungs;
  • heart;
  • organs of the digestive system - esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen.

The greenish-yellow stone will relieve you of colds, inflammation of the bronchi and lungs, help calm the heart during arrhythmia, and normalize blood pressure. He will make sure that the gastrointestinal tract organs are in order, will put metabolic processes (metabolism) in order, and will alleviate pain in the thoracic spine.

There is evidence that beryl is useful for women with various gynecological pathologies. The energy of the stone is receptive yin, just feminine.

Medicinal properties

Beryl, born in nature, receives from it a huge supply of positive energy, giving it powerful healing power. The stone is capable of:

  • Strengthen the human immune system, increasing the body's resistance to diseases of any nature.
  • Improve the functioning of the digestive system.
  • Improve metabolic processes in the body, helping to get rid of excess folds on the sides and kilograms on the body.

Ancient healers believed that beryl could cure cancer.

  • Heal diseases of the throat and bronchi (pendant or beads).
  • Relieve surges in blood pressure.
  • Solve problems with arrhythmia.

This is interesting!

One of the methods of treatment with beryl is that lithotherapists place a stone on the patient’s sore spot and pass a light beam through it.

Areas of application

Silver Jewelry with Natural Beryl
Beautifully colored beryl and varieties of beryl are popular gemstones used as gemstones in jewelry. Good specimens of beryl are highly valued and adorn collections and museum collections.

The frame is made from the metal that best suits the specific type of stone; usually, the more expensive the gem, the more noble the metal chosen.

Various small crafts, signets, and carved jewelry are also made from beryl, and opaque stones (“ordinary beryl”) are an ore mineral and serve as a source for producing beryllium oxide. It is a hard but brittle silvery-white metal that resembles aluminum. The substance is used:

  • For alloying alloys. Have you heard about beads, bracelets and rings made of “gypsy gold”? This is beryllium treated bronze.
  • For the manufacture of X-ray tubes.
  • In nuclear reactors as a neutron reflector.
  • In laser technology.
  • As a material for spaceships and aircraft.
  • To obtain rocket fuel.
  • For thermal insulation of laboratory furnaces.
  • For sound amplifiers.

Products made from beryl are an important attribute of a truly luxurious interior. They even carve beautiful figurines from large stones.

Where is beryl used?

Beryl in its pure form is beryllium ore, which in turn has found application in the nuclear and space industries, the automotive industry, the electrical industry, and the aircraft industry. For technological processes, beryl is quite expensive, and is also toxic when extracted - it causes inflammation of the respiratory system and pneumonia in a person working with beryllium. That is why the expansion of the scope of its application in industry is quite limited.

Precious colored beryl stones have found their use in jewelry. Non-jewelry rocks of the mineral are included in jewelry as ornamental stones. In addition, beryl is used in the treatment of various respiratory diseases and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

The use of beryl in talismans and amulets

Using beryl as the basis of an amulet helps a person in the following areas:

  • Search for the “other half”;
  • Harmonization of family relationships;
  • Helps to acquire calmness, poise, and strengthen fortitude;
  • Helps sharpen the mind, pay attention to important details;
  • Protects from negative influences.

Jewelry made from beryl

The mineral is widely used by jewelers to create jewelry. Faceted transparent gemstones are included in rings, necklaces, beads, and earrings. Most often, beryl is framed in gold or silver, as well as in white gold.

The most successful combination is beryl in silver for representatives of such zodiac signs as Taurus, Scorpio, Sagittarius. The combination of this mineral and precious metal helps to remove some of the aggressiveness in the character of representatives of these signs. People become more patient, calm, open to new acquaintances, and successful in achieving career goals.

Non-jewelry rocks are used in jewelry as ornamental stones; carved souvenir figurines and signets are also made from them.

Use of the mineral in other areas

Opaque "common beryl" is used as the ore from which beryllium is extracted. The element is widely used in technological fields, such as mechanical engineering, aircraft and instrument making, nuclear industry, and space industry.

Jewelry with beryl

Ring with Beryl
There are many varieties of beryl, therefore the pricing policy for jewelry with the stone is varied. Products with noble beryl are more expensive. Such a stone is framed with gold of the highest standard or platinum. Semi-precious gems are used in products made of 585 gold or silver.

Starting prices for jewelry with beryl:

  • Silver ring – from $400.
  • Pendant, silver – from $300.
  • Earrings with a scattering of stones (different types of beryl or a combination of one type with other minerals) made of silver cost from $400.
  • Beads – from $400.

Beryl is usually cut into step or brilliant cuts. The more facets, the richer the shade, the more noticeable the play of light. And the variety of varieties makes it possible to purchase jewelry for every taste and financial opportunity.

Mineral in jewelry

The physical properties of beryl, combined with its variety of species, make the mineral in demand in the jewelry world. Less valuable specimens are classified as ornamental stones. Some varieties are interesting as collection material. The most beautiful stones end up in the windows of jewelry houses, unceremoniously competing with diamonds.

Types of decorations

The range of products with beryl and the number of designer jewelry designs knows no bounds. The most popular:

  • earrings;
  • rings, rings, signets;
  • pendants, pendants;
  • beads;
  • brooches;
  • bracelets.

Some types of stone cannot be found in jewelry stores - their rarity and cost determine exclusively the individual production of the product.

Color spectrum

Many gems from the beryl family are known to us under other names:

  • Emerald is a noble nugget endowed with different shades of green.

    emerald

  • Aquamarine is a popular transparent mineral associated with the color of ice or sea green. In terms of cost, aquamarine is inferior to emerald only because it is more common in nature.

    aquamarine

  • Heliodor is a light green stone with a golden or orange tint. It can also be completely transparent with a slight yellow tint. The most rare samples are endowed with a honey tint.

    Heliodor

  • Augustite is a rare deep blue stone. Due to its tendency to fade, it is less valuable.

    Augustite

  • Goshenite is a colorless specimen.

    goshenite

  • Morganite is one of the rarest varieties. The color is usually pale pink. Instances that approach the burgundy or red palette are the most expensive.

    pebble

  • Bixbite is a mineral called “red emerald”. A very rare stone that originates in a single place on the planet. Bixbite extraction is complicated by periodic flooding of the deposit with groundwater.

    bixbit

  • Bazzit is a pale blue beryl that often appears as an aquamarine. It received a special name thanks to its discoverer, who studied the chemical composition, noting a high percentage of scandium impurities.

    Bazzit

  • Machiche beryl is a relative of augustite that loses its bright blue color much faster. For this reason, stone mining is periodic in nature, as it is considered unprofitable.
  • Rosterite is a variety close to goshenite. It can be uncolored or expressed pink.

Interestingly, heliodor was previously converted into aquamarine through processing. At a temperature of 400˚C, the gem loses its golden hue, turning into a heavenly blue mineral. Occasionally there are specimens with the “cat’s eye” effect and asterism (a rayed star pattern on the surface of the stone).

The most popular inserts in men's accessories are emeralds. This noble mineral is often combined with diamonds and set in expensive metals. Such products belong to the Premium price segment and are valued at hundreds of thousands of rubles.

For women

Women's jewelry with beryl is also divided into luxury products and jewelry in the middle price segment:

For a brooch made of yellow and white gold of an original design, inlaid with an emerald surrounded by diamonds, sapphires and tsavorites, you will have to pay more than 500 thousand rubles.

Popular types of cuts

Depending on the type of beryl, its quality and transparency, different types of cuts are used:

  • diamond;
  • stepped;
  • fantasy;
  • cabochon.

The most expensive varieties are processed with diamond cuts - emerald, morganite, bixbite. Other transparent gems lend themselves to step or mixed cutting. Cloudy specimens of lower quality are used as cabochons.

Stone setting

Emeralds, bixbites, and morganites are awarded to the most expensive metals - platinum, white, yellow, and sometimes red gold of 750 and 585 samples. Heliodor and aquamarine are set in 585 gold or 925 silver. Transparent goshenites or augustites serve as inserts in silver jewelry.

Compatibility with other stones

Beryl combines energetically with minerals such as:

  • sapphire;
  • amethyst;
  • turquoise;
  • pearl;
  • lapis lazuli;
  • Labrador;
  • onyx.

You should not combine beryls with the following stones:

  • cornelian;
  • jasper;
  • pomegranate;
  • agate;
  • ruby;
  • heliotrope;
  • malachite.

Contradictions arise in ]aventurine[/anchor], zircon, topaz, and chrysolite. Neutral relationships are observed with amber and obsidian.

How to wear

From the many varieties of beryl, everyone can choose a suitable gem. Each stone meets certain requirements:

  • The most expensive varieties (morganite, emerald, bixbite) are status minerals, jewelry with which is worn at social receptions or business meetings of the appropriate nature.
  • Aquamarine suits a classic style wardrobe.
  • Heliodor looks great with casual clothes.
  • Goshenite is the most affordable mineral, harmonizing with democratic clothing of any color scheme.

The color scheme of wardrobe items should be combined with the shade of the stone insert of the accessories.

Care instructions

Beryl is a durable gemstone that does not require special care. It is enough to follow a few recommendations:

  • It is unacceptable to wear jewelry for a long time under the bright sun, as beryl inserts will quickly fade.
  • It is undesirable to expose the mineral to acids.
  • To clean products, use water, soap and ammonia. Silver jewelry is cleaned with baking soda, followed by rinsing with cool water.

Despite the high degree of hardness and strength of the nugget, it is undesirable to drop the stone, subject it to impacts or other mechanical influences.

How to spot a fake

When talking about beryl counterfeits, we mean imitations of the most expensive and popular varieties - bixbite, emerald, aquamarine, morganite. Each of the stones can be found in two imitation versions - a synthetic mineral or a processed natural one, but of lower quality and a different accessory. Some fakes can be recognized visually, while others require gemological examination.

jewelry-with-beryl
Jewelry with Beryl

Briefly about fakes:

  • Bixbit. Red emerald is considered the rarest of beryls, costing more than green emeralds. The production of synthetic hydrothermal bixbites has been established in Russia. The cost of these stones is an order of magnitude lower. They are easy to cut, unlike natural gems, which cannot be cut due to their small size (often 0.5 carats). The fake also has a higher refractive index.
  • Emerald. In the case of emeralds, fakes are much more common, since this is the most popular mineral of the beryl group. Cheaper tsavorite, green garnet and quartz, tourmaline, jade, cubic zirconia, and peridot are passed off as natural gemstones. Natural fakes can be distinguished by the various physical properties of these nuggets. It is difficult to distinguish artificially grown stone. Sometimes the imitation is revealed by the soft outlines of the edges, which in natural emerald are clear and geometric. There are also triplets - glued plates of cheap minerals, topped with a fragment of a real emerald. As in most cases, such imitation can only be recognized with the help of special devices.
  • Aquamarine. Fake aquamarines are made from painted glass or ceramic glass. They can be easily distinguished by temperature conditions, uniformity of color and lack of dichroism (changes in shade at different viewing angles). Often aquamarine is heated or irradiated varieties of other beryls, as well as imitations from topaz, spinel, and zircons. Zircon shows bifurcated edges in the light. Topaz shines brighter, sparkles, the refraction of light is deeper than that of aquamarine. A low-grade spinel will be indicated by the accumulation of bubbles inside the insert. The low price of jewelry with aquamarine also indicates falsification.
  • Morganite. Fakes use hydrothermal synthetic morganite, glass or ceramic glass, as well as imitations of pink tourmaline, kunzite, garnet or topaz. Hydrothermal stone is distinguished by laboratory tests. Glass or ceramic indicates temperature (natural stones are characterized by coldness). Garnet and topaz are brighter than natural morganite. Quartz is cheaper in cost and is also distinguished by its turbidity.

An appropriate certificate confirming the naturalness of minerals will help protect yourself from any falsification.

Mineral Compatibility

Beryl combines harmoniously with opal, turquoise, rock crystal, moonstone, jasper and ruby.

Combination with sardonyx and malachite is not recommended. The only metal that enhances the properties of stones is cupronickel.
