Verdite stone: properties and who it suits according to zodiac sign

History and origin

Tourmaline has a long-standing relationship with people. Residents of Byzantium learned to process it in the 8th century; Russian trade flourished in the 8th century. At the same time, the conquistadors introduced Europe to the gem.

Green tourmaline stone

The famous historical stone is the giant emerald tourmaline, presented to the King of Norway, Charles XIV Johan, by the Ambassador of Brazil. In 1818, the founder of the Bernadotte dynasty ascended the throne, and the crown was adorned with “almost an emerald.” The stone strengthened friendship between countries and protected the ruler from inappropriate actions.

The Old World called the green stones “Brazilian emeralds.”

It was only in the 18th century that the mineral was classified as a variety of tourmaline. Since that time it has been used in priestly robes.

Also known as verdelite. The stone received this name due to its color: verde - green, lithos - stone.

Green is the most common of tourmalines, with a palette ranging from light green to emerald.

The stone is formed in igneous and hydrothermal rocks. Sometimes it forms druses weighing up to hundreds of kilograms or fusions of needle-crystals in the shape of rays or fans.

Description

In terms of the intensity of shades of green, the crystal can easily compete with emeralds. All this is thanks to the chromium and iron included in its composition. Another name for green tourmaline is verdelite, literally denoted as verde - green and lithos - stone.

Verdelite is the most common gem among tourmalines. The palette varies from light green to emerald. Due to the natural distribution of impurities that make up the stone, unusual color solutions are formed and each crystal is unique in its color.

Physicochemical characteristics

Green tourmaline is one of the boron-containing aluminosilicates with a crystalline structure.

The green color is created by impurities of chromium and iron. Vanadium allows the shade of the crystal to change with the light.

The gemstone is the rival of the emerald.

African stone deposits - Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe. The mines of Madagascar have been supplying druse larger than 30 cm for more than a century.

Asian deposits of the mineral are Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India. Jewelry-grade crystals are mined in Vietnam: rich, transparent, large (up to 20 cm). Russian deposits are famous for good quality raw materials: the Urals, Transbaikalia, and the Kola Peninsula.

Verdelite deposits

Verdelite is the most common mineral among all varieties of tourmaline. Most often it occurs in greisen, granite, and pegmatite.

Associations with other varieties of tourmaline, quartz, beryl or topaz are typical.

Verdelite crystals are prismatic or needle-shaped. There is pronounced shading on their surface.

This green stone was first discovered in Italy. They are still mining it there. And in Russia, verdelite is mined in the Urals and Transbaikalia.

The most significant in terms of size and quality of stones is the Minas Gerais deposit in Brazil.

It was there that a specimen about 1 meter high was found. You can only see it in photographs; it was sold to a private collection and became inaccessible to the eyes of the common man.

Verdelite stone is also mined in the USA, Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Madagascar, Kazakhstan and many other countries.

Physico-chemical

  • The crystals are hard but brittle.
  • Tourmaline that changes color when daylight changes to artificial light is called chameleonite.
  • The crystals have a well-defined zonal growth pattern. The color change occurs not only along the main axis of the crystal, but also in the transverse direction.
  • Dichroic; This is especially evident in the “head of a Negro (Moor, Turk)” variety.
  • It has a piezoelectric effect (when pressed or mechanically applied, an electric charge appears on the surface of the crystal).
  • Has pyroelectric properties.
  • Mineral crystals are sensitive to temperature increases. If you electrify a crystal, its temperature changes. Tourmaline directly converts thermal energy into electrical energy.
  • The red color of the gems is stable when heated.
  • Red tourmaline has a strong pleochroism - from dark red to yellow to scarlet.

Tourmaline pleochroism

Some crystals have a sharply defined thin strip of light, if possible oriented along the long axis of the polished stone. This is a cat's eye, highly prized by mineral connoisseurs.

Jewelry

Transparent varieties are prized by jewelers. The stone resembles emerald, but is cheaper and easier to process. It is used to create works of jewelry and an affordable range of products.

Ring with tourmaline

A carat of verdelite is valued taking into account the weight and type of stone: a 2-5 carat crystal with chrome is $165-380, a regular 5-10 carat crystal is $45-65 per carat. The cost of paraiba is up to 5.5–6 thousand dollars per carat.

The greenish natural color is enhanced by heating. The mineral becomes emerald, sometimes with a polychrome effect. The cracks are filled with tinted resin.

Products with natural green stones are rare. More often it is glass ceramic, that is, a synthetic mineral. It is durable and suitable for rings and bracelets.

Other areas

Opaque, colorless or pale green tourmaline is used in optics, radio engineering, and medicine (tourmaline underwear, belts, and other accessories).

Piezoelectric stone ionizes air, which is why it is used in hospital wards.

"Non-positive personality"

The Second Court of Cassation in Moscow upheld the sentence of actor Mikhail Efremov, who is serving a sentence in a general regime correctional colony IK-4 in the city of Alekseevka, Belgorod Region, due to a fatal accident. It happened on June 8, 2021 on Smolenskaya Square in Moscow. Then the actor’s SUV flew into oncoming traffic and collided with a Lada van, the driver of which, Sergei Zakharov, died from his injuries. The actor was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. Alcohol and traces of drugs were found in his blood.

Back on June 22, 2021, Mikhail Efremov’s lawyers, Roman Filippov and Pyotr Kharkhorin, asked for a lighter sentence for their client, pointing out that the sentence did not fully take into account the circumstances mitigating the artist’s guilt. On Wednesday, September 15, a review of Mikhail Efremov’s cassation appeal against the verdict took place.

Efremov admitted that his life “went downhill” in 2019, after the death of his mother, actress Alla Pokrovskaya, and then the “theater mother” - artistic director of the Sovremennik Theater Galina Volchek. According to the artist, it was then that he began to have serious problems with alcohol.

“The tragedy occurred through my fault. She crushed me mentally,” said Mikhail Efremov during his speech in court via video link.

In the cassation appeal, Efremov’s lawyers noted that he fully compensated the injured relatives of the driver who died in the accident for moral and material damage (in the amount of 4.6 million rubles), repented of his actions, and before the accident he actively participated in public life, was involved in charity work, and received many thanks and state awards. In the colony, there was not a single reprimand addressed to him - on the contrary, only encouragement for impeccable work and worthy behavior.

The lawyers asked the court to reduce Efremov’s sentence due to his poor health or transfer him from a general regime colony to a settlement colony.

“I ask the court to show leniency”: why Efremov was forgiven for only six months

Demonization of Pashayev, new arguments from experts, repentance and payment of damages did not help the actor avoid a real sentence

The opponent at the trial was the prosecutor's office, which sent objections to the mitigation of the artist's sentence to the cassation court. In the document, the prosecutor recalled that Efremov was repeatedly brought to administrative responsibility for violating traffic rules, and therefore cannot be a “positive person in all respects,” as the defenders assure. In addition, the prosecutor's office opposed the transfer of the actor to a colony settlement, since this would not contribute to his correction and “restoration of justice.”

“I consider it necessary to say that Mikhail Olegovich cannot benefit society in principle due to the deterioration of his health,” the state prosecutor noted at the court hearing.

As a result, the actor’s cassation appeal was denied, and the judge issued a verdict.

The actor’s defenders are unhappy with the court’s decision, one of Mikhail Efremov’s lawyers, Pyotr Kharkhorin, told Izvestia.

“I think that our client is also upset, because he was counting on showing mercy. “Alas, it didn’t work out,” the lawyer noted. He found it difficult to say about further actions of the defense.

“We need to discuss this with Mikhail Olegovich, go to his colony, which I will do in the near future,” the lawyer explained.

He added that Efremov “no longer has a trace of alcohol addiction left.”

How to spot a fake

Instead of a green gem of natural origin, glass or plastic is often offered.

Green tourmaline sizing

It is possible to identify a fake at home, knowing the properties of natural stone:

  • It is difficult to scratch verdelite;
  • if you rub it with your hands, you will feel a slight tingling sensation;
  • after heating the stone in your hands, small paper, dust, hair, threads will be attracted to it;
  • when the lighting changes, the shade of the gem changes, that is, the effect of pleochroism appears;
  • The difference between a fake is the evenly distributed color.

Refined green tourmalines are often passed off as emeralds.

Verdelite - green tourmaline

Verdelites are green tourmalines and are the most common variety of the tourmaline mineral. The color palette is very wide: light green, olive green, yellow-green, dark green, bluish-green shades. Tourmalines, like tanzanites, have an optical effect - pleochroism, which means that when viewing the stone in different directions, two primary colors of the stone appear. Very often in green tourmalines we see a second color of blue; dealers often try to take advantage of this, passing off such images as more expensive and rare indigolites (blue tourmalines). The combination of two colors in one stone makes verdelites extremely attractive for jewelry.

The main deposits of green tourmalines: Afghanistan, Brazil, Nigeria, Pakistan, Mozambique.

How to wear and care

The physical properties of the stone determined the rules for its use and storage.

How to wear

Jewelry with tourmalines is appropriate for any occasion, wardrobe and age. The younger the owner, the lighter the stone. Dark minerals of deep rich tones are intended for men.

Beads with green tourmaline

You can wear jewelry all the time, but short breaks won’t hurt: the energetically strong mineral affects the human biofield.

The stone is strongest on Mondays and Saturdays.

How to care

Care is standard for precious gems:

  • Before housework, decorations are removed.
  • High temperatures, acids, abrasives, and aggressive cleaning agents are destructive.
  • The gem is washed with a soap solution at room temperature, a soft brush or cloth. The procedure is not delayed, it is carried out every two to three months.
  • Ultrasonic and steam cleaning is prohibited.
  • To make the stone shine, rub it with a piece of soft cloth.
  • Jewelry is stored in a durable box separately from others so that its metal frame does not damage the inserts.

Pebbles are removed from negative energy on the waxing Moon (preferably at the beginning of the lunar month) by washing with cold running water.

To recharge, place it in the sun or under the waning moon.

The closer the end of the lunar month, the stronger the stone.
