Characteristics of the mineral

Amethyst stone is a type of quartz. Its chemical formula is SiO2. The purple or blue-lilac color of the rock is due to iron impurities. A transparent mineral is classified as semi-precious, while an opaque one is classified as ornamental. In nature, they form crystals or crystal aggregates - druses. The mineral has a glassy or pearlescent luster. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is 7, density is 2.65. The pebble can change its color depending on lighting, temperature and weather conditions. The color of a sun-bleached mineral is restored using X-rays.

Varieties

  • Purple amethyst is the most commonly found stone and serves as a classic example of this mineral. Among its shades are lilac, lilac-blue, lavender and lilac amethyst of varying degrees of brightness. A dark purple mineral mined in Uruguay, this almost black amethyst has a specific oily sheen.
  • Pink amethyst is a type of clear quartz that has a soft pink hue. The opaque mineral is often called “rose quartz.”
  • Green amethyst stone is very rare. Most jewelry inserts made from it are heat-treated or of artificial origin. In nature, such amethyst takes on a golden-greenish color, and in the laboratory it becomes rich green. Natural combinations of amethyst with other minerals are interesting: smoky - with smoky quartz, ametrine - with citrine, chevron - with white quartz, rutile - with genite, etc.

History and legend

In ancient Greek the word means “not drunk.” According to myth, the god of wine and fun, Dionysus, was inflamed with passion for the beautiful Amethys. But she loved the shepherd. Dionysus did not retreat, then Artemis intervened. The goddess turned the nymph into a magnificent violet stone, protecting her from intoxication. Rings with amethyst were worn at feasts.

amethyst

Amethyst and the magical properties of the stone were valued by the rulers of Sumer, the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, and the Chinese even today store precious aromatic oils in vessels made from it. The crowns of the British Empire and Russian Tsars are decorated with it.

This is one of the 12 stones on the breastplate of the high priest of Judah. Every new cardinal receives a ring with this stone upon his ordination from the Pope.

Mineral cost

The price of an amethyst stone depends on its characteristics: color, transparency, size, absence of defects and the presence of jewelry processing.

In addition, the cost is influenced by the mineral deposit - crystals of volcanic formation are less susceptible to the influence of light, and therefore are valued higher. Transparent, brightly colored and faceted amethyst costs from 10 to 150 dollars per 1 carat. Examples of pale shades are cheaper - starting from $5 per 1 carat.

An unprocessed mineral of transparent quality costs less - from $3 for a stone 1.5-2 cm in size. Opaque minerals are even less expensive - specimens 1-2 cm in size are estimated at about $1. Interestingly, the price of artificial amethyst (synthesized , hydrothermal) is not much different from the price of natural.

Care and storage

Amethyst is a durable stone, but can be scratched or damaged by strong impacts. It fades in light and direct sun, and becomes discolored in water. Therefore, they store it in a box, in a soft wrapper. Jewelry should be removed when washing dishes or doing other housework.

Amethyst stone is suitable for whom?

Those who want or need to have it with them at all times should consider the following. The stone becomes dirty, absorbs negative energy, and therefore needs to be cleaned. It is dipped in a soapy solution, if necessary, gently cleaned with a soft toothbrush, then washed under running water and blotted with a napkin.

To remove mental negativity and preserve the properties of amethyst as a stone of amulet, it is enough to wash it with water every month for five/ten minutes.

What is the price

There is no universal formula. The cost of precious minerals is determined by four characteristics: color, cut, purity, weight. Rarity, demand, pre-sale processing, and other indicators can affect the price.

The question of how much an amethyst costs is not resolved in the same way as with most gems, where the main role is played by the weight of the stone. The scale for determining value is as follows:

  1. Color intensity. The most expensive amethysts are of the “Siberian” class, according to the place where the most saturated dark stones were mined. These are dark purple crystals with a blue or pink tint.
  2. Transparency. A high-quality copy is transparent, without inclusions.
  3. Cut. Handmade imagination is valued.
  4. Weight. The price of amethyst practically does not depend on it.

In medieval Europe, amethyst was revered by church and secular rulers; it competed in price with diamonds. Today, for a transparent medium-saturated violet specimen you will have to pay $9–25 per carat, while a Siberian one will cost tens of thousands in the same currency. On the domestic jewelry market, a rich purple crystal costs 2,500 rubles. per gram.

amethyst rings

Collectible samples are evaluated according to the deposit (especially if it has already been worked out), aesthetic appeal, etc. Prices start from 1 thousand rubles. per crystal or sample.

The cost of an artificial mineral is not too different from the price of a natural one.

Use in jewelry

The jewelry history of the mineral dates back centuries - products made from purple amethyst were popular in Ancient Rome and Greece. Jewelry, talismans and cups were made from it. The clergy decorated crosses and clothes with them, and the royal jewelers inlaid crowns with them.

Today, more than ever, jewelry with transparent amethyst is relevant. Opaque pebbles are often used to make crafts and beads.

Possessing a rich, but not flashy color, this mineral is considered a universal jewelry insert. It goes well with precious and semi-precious metals in red, yellow and white colors. Jewelry in which the purple mineral is adjacent to diamonds and gems is very popular.

Without losing itself or obscuring the beauty of the gemstone, amethyst successfully emphasizes the overall brilliance and charm of the jewelry composition. The calm color of the mineral is quite suitable for women and men: delicate and warm shades are more often used for women's jewelry, and cold and dark ones for men's jewelry.

Cut

Transparent inserts in a ring, earrings, pendant or women's bracelet are usually cut in the shape of a pear, trillion, oval, heart, square. Fancy inserts made from this mineral, which decorate exclusive products, look impressive and original.

An opaque cabochon-cut stone can serve as an insert into a pendant, brooch or ring. The bead cut is typical for making charms, necklaces and beads.

List of widow's stones

Alexandrite

In Russia there is a belief that alexandrite dooms its owner to loneliness for the rest of his life. This opinion appeared in the first half of the 20th century, when scientists learned to grow the gem. Read more about it in our article “Widow’s Stone: Why Alexandrite is Called the Stone of Loneliness.”

The synthetic sample is cheaper than the natural one, so it has become widely available. Until this time, only representatives of the nobility bought real alexandrite

Alexander I was presented with a ring with alexandrite as a gift. The emperor liked the decoration, so he wore it almost without taking it off. Only once did the stone remain in the box. It was on this day that Alexander I died.

But in the 30-40s. the pebble became increasingly popular. Men purchased inexpensive synthetic alexandrite as a gift to their loved ones.

The happy destinies of millions of people were cut short by the war. But women continued to wear the jewelry in memory of their loved ones who had gone to the front. It was in those years that alexandrite was popularly called the “widow’s stone.”

At the same time, another legend appeared: if you wear jewelry with one alexandrite, a series of misfortunes begins in life. To avoid loneliness, the stone is worn in pairs.

Priests believe that the pebble pacifies the human soul. There is a belief that alexandrite changes color if its owner is sick.

Amethyst

The list of widow's stones includes amethyst. This semi-precious stone is a variety of quartz. The common color is purple.

Amethyst has an affordable price. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many families could afford jewelry with this stone. Over time, a tradition arose - as a sign of memory of a deceased loved one, wearing an amethyst ring in a silver frame.

This trend brought the pebble a bad name. They began to associate him with death. It was believed that a widow would remain lonely forever if she often wore jewelry with amethyst.

Women were afraid to accept amethyst as a gift. There was a legend that the donor would forever tie the person to himself and leave no chance to find a family again.

In the Middle Ages, the stone was often worn by priests who took a vow of celibacy. They remained alone for the rest of their lives. Thanks to the priests, amethyst was called the “apostolic” gem.

The stone was worn back in Ancient Greece. In those years, it was widely believed that amethyst helped people always think soberly and not lose their minds. Therefore, people called the gem a “sobering” stone.

Black Pearl

There is a beautiful legend that mermaids mourned their dead lovers, and their tears hardened and turned into dark pearls.

It was believed that pearls have magical powers and prevent their owner from finding family happiness with a loved one. Until now, sorcerers do not advise unmarried girls to wear pearl jewelry. Otherwise, the stone will outshine them with its beauty and will not allow them to walk down the aisle.

There is a belief that under the influence of pearls a person becomes selfish, does not notice anyone except himself and offends close people with his straightforwardness. If you continue to wear jewelry with black pearls, these character traits will take root and the person will remain alone forever.

But only pearls framed in silver have such power.

There is another version - black pearls reduce attraction and the desire to look for a partner on the side.

Topaz

A common widow's stone is topaz. In ancient times, women wore jewelry with this stone after the death of their spouse. In this way they expressed their love to the deceased and, with the help of the magical power of topaz, tried to survive the tragedy.

Young girls wore pebbles to become even more beautiful.

According to magicians, women should not wear topaz for a long time. Especially if they occupy high positions. The gem will make its owner rebellious and less desirable to the opposite sex.

The woman will get used to living without a partner and will enjoy her loneliness. It is believed that a topaz lover will not be able to find a compromise in a relationship with a man and will not want to have a family.

Magicians use topaz in their rituals. With its help, they cast magic on people who have recently lost loved ones. A person becomes detached from others, withdraws into himself and stops enjoying life.

According to sorcerers, after regular magical rituals, a person loses the desire to love and procreate. His soul becomes “empty” and insensitive. Therefore, he loses the chance to find happiness in family life.

Esotericists do not recommend selling or giving away heirloom topazes. In this way, the family loses its happiness and brings constant quarrels and suffering into life.

Pomegranate

The stone of loneliness, garnet, has long been considered royal. But monarchs often died on the battlefield or as a result of disease. Their wives became widows. Therefore, the stone acquired a bad reputation. It was believed that lovers of garnet jewelry would live a short life.

Sorcerers note the strong energy of the stone. Therefore, it is difficult for men to live with wives who constantly wear pomegranates.

In ancient times, it was believed that wearing scarlet stones for a long time would bring a series of misfortunes upon their owners, including sudden death. During mourning, women wore rings and earrings with dark red garnets.

Today, practicing magicians advise wearing garnet jewelry when experiencing a constant loss of strength. They claim that the stone helps to come to one’s senses, become decisive and friendly to others.

But you shouldn't wear pomegranate too often. Otherwise, the owner of the gem will constantly be in a state of overexcitement. He will begin to have difficulty sleeping and debilitating headaches will begin.

Garnet jewelry is worn no more than 3-4 times a month.

How to wear amethyst to enhance its properties

To enhance the magical effect of a stone, you need to know how to wear it correctly: in a pair or not, on which finger, with which metal.

  • Amethyst is a stone of lovers; to enhance energy, it is best to wear it in pairs. This is especially true for pink. If a girl is unmarried, in order to attract the attention of the opposite sex, she is recommended to wear a heart-shaped pendant and a ring. Saint Valentine, the patron saint of lovers, had a decoration made of an amethyst heart and small cupids.
  • The best combination of the mineral is with silver. It reveals the magical properties of the stone and emphasizes its beauty. Silver jewelry looks very beautiful.
  • If the mineral is in gold, it is advisable to add other minerals to it, which will create a beautiful composition. These can be combinations with delicate crystal, pale blue aquamarine, sparkling diamonds. Such a ring can be worn separately, it in itself already creates harmony.
  • Rings must be worn correctly for women and men. The stronger half should put the ring on the ring finger of the right hand. Women can wear the ring on the same finger of the left hand. If you want to recharge your energy, put the ring on your middle finger. This is often not recommended.
  • The jewelry should be worn with short breaks. The stone is capable of accumulating negative energy; it needs time to get rid of it. After lying in the box, he will be freed from negativity. You can hold the jewelry under running clean water to quickly wash away the negativity. If this is not done, the stone, having accumulated a lot of negativity, will have a negative effect on the one who wears it. Read also: Topaz stone properties.
  • When buying jewelry for yourself, choose one that you really like. The internal connection between you and the stone is very important. If you don’t have the funds, it’s better to postpone the purchase until next time.
  • Decorating with amethyst requires a certain color scheme in clothing. You cannot wear bright flashy wardrobe items with it. Cooler tones are suitable for him, which will highlight his beauty.

How to properly care for and wear an amethyst

Despite the high hardness of the mineral, it is quite vulnerable:

  • Strong impacts, falls and careless handling can affect the structure of the stone;
  • Amethyst loses its color saturation in bright sun or at high temperatures - the jewelry should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

Stone cleaning and care

Be careful: if the gem has changed shade due to exposure to temperature, it will be impossible to return the original transparency and saturation to the stone at home.

The stone must be cleaned regularly:

  • From physical dirt, stains, dust - soapy water, if the dirt is strong, you can moisten a soft cloth in the solution and lightly rub the jewelry. The stone is not afraid of ultrasonic cleaning, but caustic and aggressive household chemicals should be avoided - the jewelry will deteriorate.
  • Energy cleansing: since the stone picks up and absorbs negativity from the outside, it is important to cleanse it at least once a week. To do this, you need to put the amethyst in a transparent glass of water and leave it overnight in a dark place. After the ritual, the water must be poured out. For daily energetic cleansing, you can rinse the jewelry under running water for 5-7 minutes.

How to wear amethyst

Amethyst will not withstand the heat of strong sunlight - remove or hide the jewelry under clothes when going to the beach or walking on a hot summer day.

The jewelry must be removed during water procedures, before going to the bathhouse, sauna, or before playing sports.

Cleaning and maintaining a living space involves the use of chemicals, bleaches, grease solvents, and cleaners. Jewelry with amethyst should not be affected by these agents - the best solution would be to remove the jewelry.

Jewelry cannot be stored for a long time in the bathroom, in conditions of high humidity and high temperatures - natural amethyst will fade, lose its shine and transparency.
