Naturally Generated Obsidian
Obsidian
(eng.
Obsidian
) - the most durable destructible block in the game, which can be obtained in Survival and Adventure modes. Formed when a water flow and a lava source come together. Mined with diamond and netherite pickaxes. Can only be destroyed by an explosion from the blue wither skull.
Obsidian is also available in Creative mode. It is usually used for building dark things or for black outlines in pixel art. The piston does not move.
Obsidian in its natural form is a rare block that is quite difficult to find. Since the Halloween Update, obsidian has been used to create portals to the Nether.

Natural generation
Obsidian can be found in the chests of village forges, bastion ruins, and destroyed Nether portals.
Obsidian is generated as part of obsidian pillars, End ships, underwater canyons and destroyed Nether portals.
Can be generated randomly if water flows onto the lava lake in the cave.
Barter
A Piglin can exchange a gold bar for 1 block of obsidian.
Mining obsidian
Obsidian can be mined by destroying connected pairs of portals. But this method has several features:
- This method requires two players. The first one to take the diamond pickaxe should be in the simple world of Minecraft. The second must be in Hell (the Lower World), where it will create a portal. As soon as the portal frame appears in the simple world, the first player destroys it, and the second goes up. As a result of such actions, a new portal will appear in a place near the first portal. Using this method you can get a huge number of obsidian blocks.
- For the next method, the player must die in the game. The player creates a portal to Hell and, after passing through the portal, destroys it. By dying and being reborn in the ordinary world, it will create a new portal.
There is another method, although it will require a certain amount of materials. Obsidian can be formed by the interaction of red dust and lava, and there must be water near the dust. True, there is an opinion that this method is simply an error in the game code, as a result of which we received an obsidian block generator. For the correct operation of such a generator, you will need:
- 38m blocks of solids (such substances must not burn)
- 2 lava buckets
- 2 buckets of water
Obsidian first appeared in the Classic version of Minecraft. In subsequent versions, it was removed for a while, but in the end it was returned and it took its place in the worlds of Minecraft.
Obsidian mining
Obsidian can only be mined with a diamond or netherite pickaxe; the mining time with an unenchanted diamond pickaxe is 9.4 seconds.
If you destroy it with another tool or with your hands, this process will take 250 seconds. With a diamond pickaxe enchanted to Efficiency V, you can mine an obsidian block in 2.5 seconds, which is 3.5 times faster than mining with a regular diamond pickaxe. Obsidian forms where water meets a lava source, but if water comes into contact with flowing lava, it forms cobblestone. There is a common misconception that a giant amount of TNT can explode a block of obsidian, but this is not true. Obsidian only explodes with a blue wither skull explosion. To safely mine obsidian obtained by flooding a lava lake with water, you need to place a block of water directly above the mined block. Then, after obsidian is destroyed, the lava underneath will also turn into obsidian, and the likelihood of the mined block burning will decrease.
Obsidian can be obtained by using the appearance of new portals when breaking an existing portal-portal link. At least two methods are known:
- (SMP only)
One player stands in the Overworld with a diamond pickaxe, the second goes through the portal to the Nether. “Below” a portal is created. The “top” player breaks the portal frame, then the “bottom” player returns to the Ordinary World - another portal is created next to the previous one. This way you can get an infinite amount of obsidian. - The player descends lightly into the Lower World, extinguishes the portal and dies. After being revived (in the Overworld) and going through a portal, another portal appears “below”.
- Portals located above the top layer of bedrock in the Nether are not taken into account by the game when searching for a destination, so if you manage to enter such a portal and then return back, another portal will appear in the Nether.
There is some chance of finding obsidian in villages, however the problem with this method is that it is difficult to find villages (although this is the only option for obtaining obsidian in a super flat world).
There are three known ways to mine obsidian in the Edge dimension, two of them are very effective:
- First you need to kill the dragon, and then destroy all the pillars and collect all the obsidian. The amount of obsidian is enough to fill your inventory, the End chest, and possibly several other large chests, so you'll have to go back for the rest of the obsidian (if you don't use shulker boxes). After mining all the obsidian, you can revive the Ender Dragon; during the revival process, all the pillars will be restored themselves.
- There is another option: obsidian is mined in the Land endlessly (25 blocks at a time), but very labor-intensively, at the player’s spawn location. The procedure is simple: travel to the End, get obsidian from the platform, travel to the Overworld, return to the fortress. Repeat the cycle until the required amount of obsidian is extracted. To make the process easier, it is recommended to sleep in a bed next to the portal.
- The third, most ineffective way is to search for Edge ships. Each ship contains 20 obsidian blocks. Perhaps, for the sake of treasures in ships, you can use it, but only if the obsidian is not urgently needed.
Obsidian can be exploded with a fireball summoned by the command: /summon Fireball ~ ~ ~ {ExplosionPower:278,direction:[0.0,0.0,0.0]}
As the ExplosionPower value increases, the amount of obsidian destroyed will increase, but if the value is set below 278, obsidian destruction will not be possible.
How to do it in survival mode
If you can't find obsidian, you can make it yourself. Take a few buckets of water with you and find the source of the lava.
Step 1 - Find the lava source
Step 2 - Pour water onto the block above the lava Pour water onto the block that is above the lava so that the water flows onto the lava. In the previous step, the block on which water will be poured was selected. Do not pour water directly onto the lava.
Step 3 - Remove the water source
Use an empty bucket to remove the water source, place torches if it gets dark. Be careful, the flow of water can push you into the lava.
4th step - Obsidian mining Take a diamond or netherite pickaxe, hold down the left button on the obsidian block. The Netherite pickaxe mines obsidian in about 12 seconds, the Diamond one in 15, other pickaxes will not be able to mine obsidian, they can only break this block and in a very long time.

Characteristics of the coolest block
Wood, stone, metal, diamond... What material in Minecraft will be next in this series? It’s not at all difficult to make a slight movement with a couple of convolutions. And this movement will be quite enough to follow the diamond with the block that appears in the title of this article. Obsidian, a beautiful and mysterious word, in real life is a rock of volcanic origin. In Minecraft there is a block stronger than which cannot be found in the entire gaming world.
It cannot be obtained in all modes. But Survival and Adventure are definitely suitable. The condition for the appearance of obsidian in Minecraft is a combination of lava and water. Obsidian is cool. Explosions are nothing to him; they won’t break him. Only works with a diamond pickaxe. This strong guy is also handsome: the dark purple texture, if it doesn’t make the pulse quicken, will definitely be able to break indifference. This block can be obtained in Minecraft survival and adventure modes, but can also be used in Creative mode.
Obsidian in natural conditions in Minecraft is quite difficult to find. If you look into the village and rummage through the blacksmith chests, there is a chance you will find him there. In the Land there are entire towers made of this material. But, in general, it is much more advisable to do it yourself. As we have already said, the meeting place of water and lava is the source of the strongest block in Minecraft. But, if the lava flows, instead of a strong, handsome one, you get an ordinary cobblestone. To make it easier to mine purple stone, the water block needs to be placed exactly above the required block. In this situation, the lava under the destroyed obsidian will become what is needed, and the chance that the mined block will burn is reduced.
