What is this stone? Origin story

According to one version, in the 18th century, several bluish-green pebbles were found in the Amazon River basin. Because of the name of the river, the mineral was called Amazonian stone. But he was not found in those places again...

There is another explanation for the name of the mineral: militant Amazon women wore jewelry made of beautiful green stones. And their leader Hippolyta had a belt decorated with them. Primitive jewelry with such gems was found in large quantities in the territory inhabited by the Amazons.

When going on a hike, along with their ammunition, they took with them green stones, which, according to legend, added strength and confidence to their owner.

Officially in Russia, the discovery of the Amazonian stone in 1783 in the Southern Urals is attributed to engineer N.F. German. Mineralogist A. Breithaupt in 1847 proposed shortening the name of the mineral to “amazonite.”

History of Amazonite

There are two versions of the origin of the name Amazonite. The first of them says that the stone was named after the Amazon River. And the second connects the gem with the legendary female warriors - the Amazons.

This hypothesis is quite plausible, because Amazonite has symbolized female beauty and independence since ancient times. But the Amazons were truly fearless and always emerged victorious from any battles.

The color can be returned only when exposed to X-rays or radioactive rays, and only if the mineral was not heated to a temperature of 600°C.
