Russian jewelry exhibitions. How many of them do you need?

The study of the industry, including jewelry, exhibition movement in Russia has a recent history. Interest in this topic appeared only in the late 90s. XX century.

Most jewelry exhibitions originate in the post-Soviet space in Russia. They are regular and have a relatively constant number of participants, corresponding to the world average level of national exhibitions (42 exhibitions with an average number of 150-300 participating companies).

Within Russia, jewelry exhibitions are held in 20 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, mainly in millionaire cities (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, Kazan, Volgograd, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Novosibirsk, etc. ), large resort cities (Sochi, Kislovodsk), regional centers (Tyumen, Krasnoyarsk) and in cities with a developed jewelry industry (Kostroma, Yekaterinburg). The geography of exhibitions is generally determined by the distance of cities from Central Russia.

In full accordance with global trends, jewelry exhibition activities in Russia are concentrated in centers for the production of precious/semi-precious stones and jewelry, in recreational centers and in centers with a large population and high purchasing power of the population. Moreover, the dominant factor is the latter. At the moment, there is a growing trend in the wholesale focus of domestic exhibitions (in particular, exhibitions of the “Jewelry Russia” program), as opposed to the developing practice of retail sales at foreign exhibitions (where in previous years end buyers were not allowed at all).

The most famous jewelry exhibitions in Russia are primarily capital exhibitions, such as “Junwex. Moscow”, “Best Jewelry of Russia”, “New Russian Style”, “Golden Globe”, “Moscow Salon of Fine Arts”, “Jewelry Vernissage” held in Moscow, as well as “Junwex” and “Best Jewelry of Russia/Peter-Jeweler” " in St. Petersburg. The most significant regional jewelry exhibitions are “Junwex Ekaterinburg”, Sochi exhibitions “Interjeweler”, “Golden Season” (autumn continuation of the exhibition “Interjeweler”), “Gold of the Summer Capital”, Yekaterinburg “UralJewelir” and “UralJeweler-Spring”, Volga region “ JewelerExpo. Kazan”, Kaliningrad “Yantar Baltiki” and Novosibirsk “SibJeweler”, jewelry festival “Golden Ring of Russia” (Kostroma). A quarter of the total number of annual jewelry shows in the country are international.

Reputable exhibitions of gems are the Mineral Show exhibition-fair (held since 1990) and the World of Stone. These exhibitions are attended by lovers of hand-made jewelry that is not produced in industrial quantities, connoisseurs of semi-precious stones and unique ornamental stones.

The St. Petersburg exhibitions “Junwex” and “PiterJeweler” and the Moscow “Jeweler” and “New Russian Style” exhibitions are aimed at consumers of mass-market products. Premium-class jewelry is offered at the Moscow exhibitions “Moscow Salon of Fine Arts”, “Guild of Jewelers”, “Golden Globe”. Inexpensive products (silver jewelry with semi-precious stones) can be purchased at the Moscow Jewelry Vernissage exhibitions and at almost all regional exhibitions.

The oldest jewelry exhibition association in the country, R.O.S.Juvelirexpo, annually holds 4 seasonal shows at its exhibition site in Sokolniki in Moscow. These are the March exhibition "Jeweler - Spring", the May exhibition "Jeweler-2", the September exhibition "Jeweler" - the oldest jewelry exhibition in the country (this year it will celebrate its 55th anniversary) - and the December exhibition "Jeweler-3". All of them are positioned by the organizers as international.

“Jeweler” is the only jewelry exhibition in Russia, which, along with exhibitions in Basel (Switzerland) and Vicenza (Italy), is one of the largest in the world. In addition, this is the largest international jewelry exhibition in terms of the number of participating countries.

The largest and most modern universal exhibition association in Russia, specializing in the jewelry industry, including RESTEC (St. Petersburg), holds three annual seasonal jewelry shows at the exhibition venues of both capitals. In February, the largest international jewelry exhibition in Russia “Junwex St. Petersburg” in terms of the number of participants (more than 600) in Russia takes place in St. Petersburg. In Moscow, the All-Russian Exhibition Center hosts the largest wholesale jewelry fair “Junwex Moscow” (September) and the first international jewelry exhibition in Russia “New Russian Style” (May). The jewelry show “New Russian Style” contributed to the emergence of modern exhibition technologies in the country.

The Unified Exhibition Program of the association RESTEC “Jewelry Russia”, within the framework of which the above events are held, is aimed not only at Russian jewelers, but also at members of the international confederation CIBJO (the association became an official representative in 2011), and develops civilized exhibition services at the Russian jewelry market.

In addition, as part of the expansion strategy, the program is developing specialized sections, including JUNWEX TECH and JUNWEX WATCH in Moscow or JUNWEX SILVER in St. Petersburg. One of the possible options in the future is the creation of a specialized JUNWEX GEMS section for companies offering cutting and insertion into jewelry.

Turning to history, it should be noted that JUNWEX was born out of the eternal confrontation between Moscow and St. Petersburg. It was vitally important for both capitals, which have enormous jewelry potential, to be able to organize professional forums. When the Moscow and St. Petersburg jewelry exhibitions coincided in time, it became clear that St. Petersburg could not withstand head-on competition.

The exhibitions were spaced out in time and, with some convention, agreed on specialization: the exhibition in Sokolniki, which rightfully occupies first place in the Russian ranking, is considered an exhibition for wholesalers. St. Petersburg Junwex has gained fame as an experimental platform - new collections are brought here, new ideas are tested, new names are discovered. Over ten years of work in Manege, since 1992, the exhibition has grown so much that it had to move to the pavilions of the largest exhibition.

Another category of organizers includes various industry associations. The most active of them are: the “Guild of Jewelers of Russia”, which organizes the exhibition of the same name “Guild of Jewelers” in the Moscow Manege (December), as well as the “Guild of Jewelers of the North-West” together with “Peter-Jeweler Expo”, which organizes the largest in terms of the number of visitors (20 000) exhibition “Peter the Jeweler” (January).

Separately, it is worth mentioning specialized exhibitions, the initiators and organizers of which are the jewelry manufacturers themselves. Their projects work in support of domestic manufacturers and pursue the goal of promoting Russian jewelry brands in the domestic market (“First Professional Jewelry Exhibition,” 2012).

“Right now, domestic jewelry companies have a clear understanding that the main threat to the Russian jewelry industry comes from foreign manufacturers,” says President Flun Gumerov. Russian importers of foreign jewelry are unwittingly “digging a grave” for domestic manufacturers, using, among other things, such a serious tool as exhibitions. Moreover, many Russian companies present imported products at exhibitions under the guise of domestic, their own production, and I believe that in the face of such a threat we must unite.”

“Initially, both the oldest jewelry exhibition in Sokolniki and the St. Petersburg exposition were organized so that domestic manufacturers could show their achievements, their new products,” shares V.B. Radashevich, general director of the Russian Jewelers Guild, in an interview with the Russian Jewelry Network. After importers of foreign products and foreign participants began to take an active part in them, a situation arose when anyone who bought space could exhibit the goods they saw fit. Considering the huge flow of smuggled and counterfeit products, the situation is ripe for holding a specialized exhibition of a domestic jewelry manufacturer (“Jewelers Guild - 2005”).

The number of jewelry shows held annually in Russia is quite large, and their level is high. This is confirmed by the constant growth in the number of their participants and visitors. And the range seems to be growing.

But there remain jewelry professionals who believe that the number of exhibitions in Russia does not meet the goals of holding such events. An industry exhibition is a kind of show where each company exhibits new collections. In order to take reasonable participation in the number of exhibitions that exist today and to interest potential partners with their offers, participants must change their assortment by at least 30–50% in one year. In fact, manufacturers display the same product at their stands year after year.

Often the commercial interests of the company organizing the exhibition come to the fore, rather than the interests of the manufacturer and trade. Many jewelers believe that it is high time to bring order to jewelry exhibition activities, since several exhibitions are often held at the same time, which negatively affects both manufacturers and potential partners. There is no concentration, and, as a result, it is difficult to achieve a certain result.

Others believe that there are positive factors in holding exhibitions in parallel. These include a double advertising campaign and double work by both organizers to attract wholesale buyers, who, as a rule, attend both exhibitions.

And another problem that worries a number of trade representatives is retail trade at exhibitions. Industry professionals complain that specialized exhibitions are essentially turning into big stores. Exhibitions aimed only at market professionals are characterized by presentations of new collections, searches for wholesale buyers, and a busy business program. It is here that world trends and fashion trends are formed, dictating the development of the jewelry market for the coming periods. And retail trade diverts the resources of production workers to organize and fill “retail” counters, and, what’s even worse, products are sold at dumping prices.

By the way, in world practice, mixing two exhibition forms, professional and retail, is not allowed at all. One of the few exceptions is the show in Basel, the organizers of which provided exhibitors, upon obtaining the appropriate license, with the opportunity to retail in a separate pavilion. Moreover, the question of the need to hold different jewelry exhibitions or hold an exhibition in Basel several times a year has not yet arisen before European organizers.

May and June

The beginning of May will present jewelry lovers with the international annual jewelry fair “OROAREZZO” in Tuscany (Italy), the doors of which will hospitably open from May 5 to 8. Real spring warmth will bring with it the International Jewelry Exhibition in Moscow from May 23 to 27 at VDNKh.

May will also be marked by the All-Russian specialized exhibition “Jewelry Spring”, which will be held from May 24 to 27 in Volgograd, and the “Jewelry Salon” in Krasnodar (from May 30 to June 2).

On February 6–10, 2021, the 17th International Jewelry Exhibition “Junwex St. Petersburg” will be held in St. Petersburg. This is the first major forum of jewelry experts of the year, which sets the tone and shapes trends in the industry for the entire season.
