Former milky-gray stones turn into blue topazes, former milky stones without a gray tone do not turn into anything and are sent directly to the magnetron chamber. 5. Re-sort by color. The most saturated blue stones will go on sale with this color. Most of the stones go on a date with the magnetron. 6. Magnetron sputtering of a thin film. After sputtering a vanadium film several microns thick, topazes turn into the now very popular RAINBOW (MYSTIC) TOPAZES . Mystic topazes (Rainbow topazes) and Azotic topazes. I would like to warn gullible owners and potential buyers of “100% natural” rainbow and mystic topaz . Their color, play, “ rainbow effect ” are not of natural origin!!! Such stones cannot be cleaned in ultrasonics or a steam bath. The film may break and the rainbow effect will disappear forever!! Such stones cannot be exposed to direct sunlight for a long time - the film is destroyed in the sun. And naturally, soldering products with such stones is absolutely impossible. When exposed to high temperatures, the film that gives the rainbow effect will be destroyed, and the base color of the stone may be lost. Azotic topazes are even easier to produce. A thin layer of metallized paint is applied to the surface of the pavilion (the lower faceted cone of the stone). Thanks to the reflection of light from the paint and refraction in the edges, a specific play of color of azotik-topaz appears. Naturally, there is nothing natural in the origin of this color of topaz either. Pink and red topazes. Pink and red are the rarest (not counting green) colors of natural origin in topaz. But nevertheless, such stones exist! We will most likely disappoint many owners of pink topaz. Stones weighing more than 1 carat, rich pink or slightly orange-red in color, which received their color from nature and not as a result of refining are very expensive topazes. Their cost starts from $500 per carat. Remember how much you bought your pink stones for? Alas - there are no miracles in the world.. Place your pink topaz on the windowsill, in direct sunlight.. If after a few weeks it turns into dirty gray or light brown - you are lucky! You HAD real unrefined natural pink topaz. Unfortunately, naturally pink topazes are afraid of the color of the sun and most often (for the sake of truth, let us add - NOT ALWAYS) fade very quickly almost to a colorless state. However, pink and red topazes with a color of natural origin are rare, but can be found in collections or in jewelry. To fix the color (prevent fading), they have to be gently and carefully heated, and a positive result is not always achieved. It is extremely rare that pink and red topazes have strong, saturated tones. But - sometimes they do!!! Natural pink topaz, photo by Lembeck Gems Almost all of the “conventionally natural” pink topaz currently available on the world market is produced either from Brazilian light brown topaz, the pink color obtained as a result of heat treatment. Such topazes are less sensitive to sunlight, the fading process can last for several years, and this process is reversible - repeated heat treatment will return the pink color. The international gemological community recognizes this method of refining topaz. But, unfortunately, when purchasing pink topaz there is no guarantee of purchasing even these. Numerous cheap pink topazes on the market today are the product of thin film magnetron sputtering. Such stones have a very specific and easily recognizable color: Red topazes are hundreds of times rarer than pink ones! It is impossible to give topaz a red color using generally accepted methods of refining, heat treatment and irradiation. Natural red topaz costs four figures per carat. Such stones practically never come on the market for free sale, and it is safe to say that all modern red topazes offered for sale have been subjected to magnetron sputtering of a dye film. Green Topazes Green topazes in nature are the rarest of all topazes. Their finds amount to no more than a few pieces per year! The cost of 1 carat of green topaz is comparable to the cost of a decent emerald. Occasionally, green topazes after the magnetron appear on the market, but they are not widely used. Blue topazes. Things are also “fun” with blue topazes of natural natural color. There are three types of blue topazes distinguished by “trade names”. Sky-blue topaz, Swiss-topaz, London-blue topaz. The last one – “London” – is the most saturated in color, often very deep blue. There are no such topazes in nature; 100% of the stones received their color as a result of irradiation with or without previous heat treatment. “Swiss” topazes, medium in saturation, exist in principle with natural color, but they are very rare and expensive (see above). Color is the result of standard one- or two-stage processing. Sky blue topaz is the most common blue topaz. 99.99% of all “celestial creatures” are also irradiated. Untreated sky blue topaz costs from 10-20 dollars per carat for small stones, and from 100 dollars per carat for stones over 5 ct. Blue topazes Sky-blue, Swiss-blue and London-blue The color intensity of irradiated blue topazes depends on the duration and intensity of irradiation. The period of mandatory aging of topazes (for the complete disappearance of residual induced radiation) before they go on sale also depends on the last factor. For London-blue topaz, this period is calculated at 10 months. Imperial topazes (orange and brown topazes) Numerous “Imperial” topazes - bright yellow, yellow-orange, red-orange - are approximately how they were born in nature... But - much less saturated. Their color can be brought up to “decent” by heat treatment, but the result of such a procedure is not always predictable - pink topazes can also be obtained. Unprocessed saturated imperials predominate on the market, their cost is low.. They are not respected in the gemological and jewelry community, there are also few fans of them.. It is only important to keep in mind that bottle glass is often sold under the guise of Imperial topaz or (in best case) - overheated, formerly colorless, quartz, from which, for one reason or another, it was not possible to produce either amethyst or citrine.. Colorless topazes.

Perhaps the only variety of topaz does not raise doubts about the naturalness of its “coloring”. Colorless topazes cannot retain their colorlessness either when heated or when irradiated. If you have a product with colorless topaz, do not keep it in the sun for a long time, do not go to the beach to sunbathe with it. It can become very cloudy.. Colorless topazes are almost never counterfeited - rock crystal is even more expensive! The jewelry value of colorless topaz was widely recognized in only one country in the world - the USSR. Historical reference. The oldest written mention of the heat treatment of topaz dates back to the 1st millennium BC! A certain Greek learned to make topazes, which today we would call sky blue or swiss. He boiled the first ones in olive oil, and annealed the second ones wrapped in grape leaves in clay.
